Auto Industry Tracker - WSJ.com : Toyota Plans Electric-Vehicle Concepts for Detroit Show: "Toyota Plans Electric-Vehicle Concepts for Detroit Show

The leader in hybrid vehicle sales, Toyota Motor Co. plans to show off the redesigned 2010 Prius at the Detroit auto show in January — but also some electric-vehicle concept cars.

Bob Carter, group vice president at Toyota Motor Sales USA, said Toyota is working on many different technologies despite its big bet on hybrid vehicles.

“There will be more than one technology that will meet everybody’s needs,” Mr. Carter said in an interview at the L.A. show, whether that is an electric vehicle, clean diesel, electric-gasoline hybrid technology or fuel-cell vehicle.

That mantra was repeated throughout the day at the show. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is focusing on zero-emission electric vehicles, planning to bring one to market in the U.S. and Japan by the end of 2010, that will then be offered globally in 2012.

But Mr. Ghosn acknowledged that the electric technology won’t work for all markets. Take Brazil where biofuel is already in wide use, Mr. Ghosn predicts electric vehicles won’t be favored as they will in more mature urban markets. – Kate Linebaugh
