Yale Environment 360: Revenge of the Electric Car

Yale Environment 360: Revenge of the Electric Car: "To get oil, you have to drill thousands of feet below the surface of the earth – often in a hostile nation – pump it up, refine it, ship it (via pipeline or tanker), then store it until somebody comes along with a thirsty SUV. All in all, an expensive and rigid system. Electrons, on the other hand, come from many places: wind turbines, solar panels, hydroelectric dams, nukes and even burning coal. This simple fact upends everything. With electric cars, we’re not dependent on sheiks in the Middle East. We’re dependent on our own ingenuity."

Powering Our Automotive Future with--Pond Scum: Scientific American: "Corn—or the cellulose in everything from wood chips to crop stalks—are often touted as the basis of the fuel of the future. But Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates is betting that algae will provide the answer to our future fuel needs. He's so sure, in fact, that last week he joined the Rockefeller family and London-based Wellcome Trust to invest $100 million in a California start-up devoted to churning out biofuel from this tiny primitive plant.

EcoWorld » Gridpoint & Electric Vehicles

EcoWorld » Blog Archive » Gridpoint & Electric Vehicles: "How Much Electricity for all Commuters? ” you can calculate what it would take to replace our combustion-driven automotive fleet with electric vehicles. The assumptions that the spreadsheet default to (which you can change to anything you wish) indicate that based on 4.0 kilowatt-hours per mile, and 40 miles per day of average driving per vehicle, it would take 10 gigawatt-hours to power 1.0 million electric vehicles. At ten hours of off-peak charging per night, that would be an additional 1.0 gigawatt of off-peak energy going into the grid per each additional 1.0 million electric vehicles. But if the winds come and go, and the solar peak is in the middle of the day, where will this energy come from?"

Revenge of the Electric Car: "After years of false starts and failures, the electric car may finally be poised to go big-time. With automakers from GM to Chrysler to Nissan preparing to roll out new plug-in hybrids or all-electric models, it looks like the transition from gasoline to electricity is now irreversible."

Auto dealers already routinely conduct vehicle safety inspections. However, the Green Checkup will focus on those things that have the most impact on fuel economy. We’re talking about oil and air filters, engine performance, tire pressure and emission controls."

Watch out for Hornet-man: Conquering the fear of bike commuting in the nation's bike capital - PDX Green - A blog about sustainable living - The Oregonian: "For years, I was scared to bike to work. In Portland, of all places.

I was afraid I'd get flattened, out there on my rinky-dink bike amid the beefy Yukons and boxy Westfalia vans that roam the region. These are not unusual fears. Even in the nation's bike-happiest city, fewer than five percent of Portland workers pedal to the office, according to U.S. Census estimates. Some of the rest might consider the option if persuaded they'd get home in one piece.

I wasn't persuaded. But I tried it anyway. Three months later, I'm alive to report: The fear is gone"

Thanks to you for making your voice heard on Capitol Hill. The U.S. Senate just voted overwhelmingly, 93 to 2, to approve legislation containing a one-year extension of the crucial wind energy Production Tax Credit (PTC) through December 31, 2009. The bill, H.R. 6049, also would create a new investment tax credit for purchases of small wind systems used to power homes, farms and small businesses.

Next, the bill must be approved by the full House of Representatives in a vote late this week. Once again, your voices are crucial in order to clear this final hurdle before Congress adjourns at the end of September. This vote is the last opportunity this year for Congress to extend the PTC."

You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.''
'In a subsequent interview with the Daily News, Palin said discussion of alternative views on the shape of the Earth should be allowed in Alaska classrooms. 'I don't think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn't have to be part of the curriculum,' she said.'
