Two brands chose the same day this week to reveal their plug-products.
Mitsubishi Motors unveiled the iMiev, a five seater hatchback than is claimed to have arange of 160km per charge and can reach speeds of 130km/hr.
It is factory designed and built car from Japan. Mitsubishi Motors chief executive John Leighton says the cars will be trialled here before going on sale to the public, probably next year.
Not wishing to be beaten to the draw, Hyundai Automotive New Zealand Ltd also launched an electric car called the Electron. It, too is five door hatch.
But it differs from the Mitsubishi in that the car originates in South Korea as a conventional petrol engined Getz. The pertrol engine is removed in South Auckland and is replaced by an electric motor.
