Geothermal should produce 12,100 Megawatts by 2025 - Beyond Fossil Fuel

Geothermal should produce 12,100 Megawatts by 2025 - Beyond Fossil Fuel:
"Geothermal should produce 12,100 Megawatts by 2025 - 10/31/08

A tremendous amount of progress needs to be made in the area of renewable sources of power generation. Wind power has been expanding and solar has grown somewhat. A huge source of energy can be found domestically right below our feet, its geothermal energy. This natural heat energy can be tapped and could provide almost limitless energy. In Some places geothermal energy is enormous.

Now the U.S. Department of the Interior has decided to offer up leases for geothermal development on 190 million acres of Federal land in 11 states. The power potential of these areas could be up to 5,540 megawatts. This could come on line as soon as 2015. It could power 5.5 million average homes. By 2025 the amount of electricity produced by geothermal could increase to 12,100 megawatts.

The lease money could go 50% to the state, 25% to the county where the project is located and 25% to the federal fund for geothermal power development.

National Parks and wilderness areas will be off limits to geothermal development."
