The History of Far West Fibers

The History of Far West Fibers: "Far West Fibers (FWF) was founded in January, 1980 by Tom Lindbloom, president of Conifer Douglas Logging in Roseburg, Oregon and Ron Frashour, former plant manager for Independent Paper Stock. The first facility of FWF was located in Beaverton. In the first month of operation, FWF sold a combined 100 tons of Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) to Willamette Industries, Albany (now International Paper), and Old Newsprint (ONP) to Publishers Paper, Oregon City (now Blue Heron).

In February 1982, with financial assistance from Willamette Industries, FWF purchased E-Z Recycling which was located on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon. E-Z Recycling was the recycling division of Fred Meyer."

How does the Automotive X-Prize fit into your strategy?
2:25
We see the automotive Xprize as a means to validate publicly that the 2e is a market viable product. The test slated for the competition will put the vehicle through the same type of paces that are normal of a development cycle but do so in public view with a third party evaluating our performance

Secular Morality

Secular Morality: "Secular Morality: What Is It? An Exposition and a Defence (1880)

by Charles Watts

AMONG the systems of moral philosophy that have been promulgated as guides for human conduct, Utilitarianism occupies the foremost place. It appears to Secularists as more definite and satisfactory than any other, and certainly at the present time it is more generally accepted by thinkers and that class of men whose views mold the intellectual opinions of the age. The principle of Utilitarianism has a regard solely to the uses of things; hence all actions by it are to be judged of by their use to society, and the morality of an action will consequently depend upon its utility. An important question here suggests itself: What is Utility, and how is it to be judged of and tested?"

Secular ethics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Secular ethics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Secular ethics is a branch of moral philosophy in which ethics is based solely on human faculties such as logic, reason or moral intuition, and not derived from purported supernatural revelation or guidance (which is the source of religious ethics). Secular ethics can be seen as a wide variety of moral and ethical systems drawing heavily on humanism, secularism and freethinking.[citation needed]
The majority of secular moral concepts consist, on the grand scale, of the acceptance of social contracts, and on a more individual scale of either some form of attribution of intrinsic value to things, ethical intuitionism, or of a logical deduction that establishes a preference for one thing over another, as with Occam's razor. Approaches like utilitarianism and ethical egoism are considered rather more radical.[citation needed]
It must be mentioned that the concept of secular ethics is not necessarily opposed to or inherently contrasting with religious ethics. Certain sets of moral beliefs, such as the golden rule or a commitment to non-violence, could be held by each position and mutually agreed upon. As well, it must be mentioned that secular ethics have been developed differently given the different times and different situations faced."

10 Damn-Near Perfect Cars | Autopia | Wired.com: "A certain automotive philistine colleague here at Wired.com recently said of our love of cars, “It all seems just like religion and professional sports: a huge con based on a pointless loyalty. You can’t tell me that there are more than a couple of sound designs that are simple and would last for ages and that all the variety and complexity is totally unnecessary.”"

Are you a jerk at work? Marshall Loeb's Daily Money Tip - MarketWatch

Are you a jerk at work? Marshall Loeb's Daily Money Tip - MarketWatch: "According to an article in the June issue of the Harvard Business Review, an overwhelming majority of people would rather work with a less-skilled but likeable person than a more-competent jerk.

The study was conducted by Tiziana Casciaro, assistant professor of organizational behavior at Harvard Business School, and Miguel Sousa Lobo, assistant professor of decision sciences at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. They collected data involving 10,000 work relationships.

Given these detailed studies, it may be worthwhile to ask: Are you the office jerk?

While most people deny being a jerk at work, in our overstressed and competitive work environment it's easy not to always notice when you're behaving badly."

5 Myths That Can Kill a Startup – GigaOM: "Myth #2: It’s About Your Great Idea

Truth: It’s About Your Customer

Many aspiring entrepreneurs are waiting to come up with the killer idea that will rocket them into fame and fortune. The reality is that ideas are a dime a dozen and even the best ones must be launched at the right time. Too early and there is no demand for your product, too late and you’ve missed the market. It’s much easier to fulfill an existing need with your product than it is to convince people they need it in the first place.

In other words, it’s about your customer. Start by A/B testing your products to get real user feedback on different features and designs. Adaptive experimentation, defined by the American Marketing Association as “continuous experimentation to establish empirically the market response functions,” has been shown (PDF) to be critical when it comes to successfully creating viral growth."

5 Myths That Can Kill a Startup – GigaOM: "Myth #1: Hire Smart People and Let Them Do Their Magic

Truth: Hire Stars and Let Them Do Their Magic

Intelligence is important, but only insofar as it helps with performance and execution. As Malcolm Gladwell points out in “Outliers,” while some minimum level of intelligence might be necessary for superior performance, in many jobs it’s not in and of itself enough to ensure it. You need people willing and able to work as part of a team, and sometimes superior individual contributors can negatively affect team performance by creating affective or role-based conflict (for more on those, see Myth #3 below). As Reed Hastings puts it, you should eliminate all brilliant jerks from your team."
